‘Teaching children about the natural world should be seen as one of the most important events in their lives’ – Thomas Berry..
..Well Thomas Berry, I couldn’t agree more. As a nanny I’m always keen to find new, fun and creative ways to get the girls interacting with nature and exploring it in all its glory!
Here’s a little project myself and Ellie have come up with that has provided us with endless entertainment.
PARTY PINECONE BUNTING!You will need..

  • pine cones
  • Coloured poster paints and brushes
  • Baking tray, lined with baking parchment
  • Twine or string

First things first, this activity is a winner in all weather conditions! You can split this activity over a few days too if you wish. Put on your wellies, coats, boots, hats, flip flops, cardigans, sunglasses, gloves and scarves – head on down to your local park. (Note- you will need to take a bag/ basket with you, something to gather the fallen pine cones into.) We collected a variety pine cones, all shapes and sizes! Once you have as many as you’d like (usually as many as we can carry in our case) head home and get in the kitchen!

Line a baking tray with baking parchment and pre heat the oven to 200 degrees. In a large bowl, rinse the pine cones and place onto the tray. Bake the pine cones for 25 minutes, this allows the sap to burn away and bugs – effectively sterilising the pine cones for safe use!

Once the pine cones are baked and cooled, they are ready for painting! You may wish to paint them a variety of bright colours, in patterns and even decorate them with extra glitter and sequins.

After decorating leave for at least 4-6 hours to ensure all glue, glitter, sequins and paint are dry and secure! Using the string or twine, you can now start constructing your bunting! Take a look at our finished product!

Enjoy!!
